Debian and Ubuntu Hyprland Dots Notes

Previously, Debian and Ubuntu had an older version of Hyprland. That is no longer true.

  • Hyprland-Dots are now compatible on Debian and Ubuntu.
  • A recent update to Debian-Hyprland and Ubuntu-Hyprland 24.04 LTS and 25.10 allows them to run the current Hyprland version.
    • As of this writing, that is v0.54.2

Note

For existing Ubuntu or Debian users: you must re-download and re-run the <distro>-Hyprland scripts to get the updated version of Hyprland and support for the current dotfiles.

Debian

  • Debian 13 (Trixie), Testing (Forky), and Unstable (SID) are fully supported.
  • Hyprland is compiled from source on Debian.
    • This means a longer install process.
    • A newer version of Hyprland might not compile in the future, especially on Trixie.

Ubuntu

  • Ubuntu 24.04 and 25.10 are currently supported.
  • Ubuntu installs use a PPA to install the current version of Hyprland.
  • Ubuntu 26.04 when released will also be supported.
    • At that time, support for Ubuntu 25.10 will be dropped.
    • From 26.04 onward, only LTS versions of Ubuntu will be tested.
    • Interim releases may work but are not officially supported.

Important

Ubuntu installs depend on a third-party PPA for the current version of Hyprland. If this PPA is no longer available, Ubuntu support will be dropped unless a replacement can be found. Ubuntu 26.04 currently has Hyprland v0.52.2 in its official repository — this may be updated going forward.
