The future of work
①According to a leading business consultancy, 3–14% of the global workforce will need to switch to a different occupation within the next 10–15 years, and all workers will need to adapt as their occupations evolve alongside increasingly capable machines. Automation – or 'embodied artificial intelligence' (AI) – is one aspect of the disruptive effects of technology on the labour market. 'Disembodied AI', like the algorithms running in our smartphones, is another.
②Dr Stella Pachidi from Cambridge Judge Business School believes that some of the most fundamental changes are happening as a result of the 'algorithmication' of jobs that are dependent on data rather than on production – the so-called knowledge economy. Algorithms are capable of learning from data to undertake tasks that previously needed human judgement, such as reading legal contracts, analysing medical scans and gathering market intelligence.
③'In many cases, they can outperform humans,' says Pachidi. 'Organisations are attracted to using algorithms because they want to make choices based on what they consider is "perfect information", as well as to reduce costs and improve productivity.'
④'But these enhancements are not without consequences,' says Pachidi. 'If routine cognitive tasks are taken over by AI, how do professions develop their future experts?' she asks. 'One way of learning about a job is "legitimate peripheral participation" – a novice stands next to experts and learns by observation. If this isn't happening, then you need to find new ways to learn.'
⑤Another issue is the extent to which the technology influences or even controls the workforce. For over two years, Pachidi monitored a telecommunications company. 'The way telecoms salespeople work is through personal and frequent contact with clients, using the benefit of experience to assess a situation and reach a decision. However, the company started using a [data] analytics tool that defined when account managers should contact certain customers about which kinds of campaigns and what to offer them.'
⑥The algorithm – usually built by external designers – often becomes the keeper of knowledge, she explains. In cases like this, Pachidi believes, workers learn through the 'algorithm's eyes' and become dependent on its instructions.[?] Alternative explorations – where experimentation and human instinct lead to progress and new ideas – are effectively discouraged.
⑦Pachidi and colleagues have observed people developing strategies to deal with the impact of these algorithms on their work. 'We are seeing cases where workers feed the algorithm with false data to reach their targets,' she reports.
⑧It's scenarios like these that many researchers are working to avoid. Their objective is to make AI technologies more trustworthy and transparent, so that organisations and individuals understand how AI decisions are made. In the meantime, says Pachidi, 'We need to make sure we fully understand the dilemmas that this new world raises regarding expertise, occupational boundaries and control.'
⑨Economist Hamish Low believes that the future of work will involve major transitions across the whole life course for everyone. 'The traditional trajectory of full-time education followed by full-time work followed by a pensioned retirement is a thing of the past,' says Low. 'Instead, get ready to expect a multistage employment life: one where retraining happens across the life course, and where multiple jobs and no job happen by choice at different stages.'
⑩On the subject of job losses, Low believes the predictions are founded on a falsehood: 'It assumes that the number of jobs is fixed. If in 30 years, half of 100 jobs are being carried out by robots, that doesn't mean we are left with just 50 jobs for humans. The number of jobs will increase: we would expect there to be 150 jobs.'
⑪Dr Ewan McGaughey, at Cambridge's Centre for Business Research and King's College London, agrees that 'apocalyptic' views about the future of work are misguided. 'It's the laws that restrict the supply of capital to the job market, not new technologies that causes [sic] unemployment.'
⑫His recently published research answers the question of whether automation, AI and robotics will mean a 'jobless future' by looking at the causes of unemployment. 'History is clear that change can mean redundancies. But social policies can tackle this through retraining and redeployment.'
⑬He adds: 'If there is going to be change to jobs as a result of AI and robotics then I'd like to see governments seizing the opportunity to improve policy to enforce good job security. We can "programme" the law to prepare for a fairer future of work and leisure,' McGaughey says.
⑭'The promises of these new technologies are astonishing. They deliver humankind the capacity to live in a way that nobody could have once imagined,' he adds. 'But as the industrial revolution brought past subsistence agriculture, and the corporate revolution enabled mass production, a third revolution has been pronounced. But it will not only be one of technology. The next revolution will be social.'

Dr Stella Pachidi believes that some of the most fundamental changes are happening
as a result of the 'algorithmication' of jobs ← 状语:变化"由于……"
that are dependent on data rather than on production ← 定语从句修饰 jobs
– the so-called knowledge economy.
Pachidi believes that changes are happening.(其余全是"为什么/什么样的工作"的修饰)
读法:先抓 believes that ... are happening 的主干,再回填 as a result of / that.../ – 同位语。
New technology is reshaping work: automation and algorithms now do tasks that once needed
human judgement, and can even control how people work, sometimes pushing them to game the
system. Experts disagree on the danger — Pachidi warns we may lose expertise, while Low and
McGaughey argue jobs will actually grow and that better laws, not new machines, decide
whether work is fair and secure.
True / False / Not Given
Q1 According to the consultancy, all workers will have to change to a new occupation within 10–15 years.
3–14% ... will need to switch to a different occupation";"all workers will need to
Q2 Algorithms can perform some tasks better than people can.
答案:TRUE
依据:¶3 "In many cases, they can outperform humans." → outperform = do better than,正面对应。
Q3 Most workers in Pachidi's study fed the algorithm with false data.
答案:NOT GIVEN
依据:¶7 只说 "We are seeing cases where workers feed the algorithm with false data"——举了"有这种
A = Dr Stella Pachidi B = Hamish Low C = Dr Ewan McGaughey
1. The total number of jobs is likely to rise rather than fall. → B(¶10 "150 jobs")
2. Unemployment is caused by laws limiting capital, not by new technology. → C(¶11)
3. Depending on algorithms can damage how newcomers learn a profession. → A(¶4 future experts /
legitimate peripheral participation)
4. Governments should use policy to guarantee secure, fairly paid work. → C(¶13)
Summary Completion(ONE WORD ONLY)
Automation, described as 'embodied' AI, is one ______ effect of technology on the labour market. → disruptive
Organisations like algorithms partly because they help reduce ______ and improve productivity. → costs
Low says the belief that the number of jobs is ______ is a falsehood. → fixed
McGaughey predicts the next revolution will be not technological but ______. → social
固化规则:题干出现 most / all / majority 这类量词,原文必须有对应的"量"才能判 T/F;
题目(锚定本文主题,方便你看"输入如何变输出"): Some people believe that the growing use of automation and artificial intelligence in the workplace will cause widespread unemployment. To what extent do you agree or disagree?
The spread of automation and artificial intelligence into the workplace has revived an old
fear: that machines will leave large numbers of people without work. While I accept that these
technologies will be deeply disruptive, I disagree that mass unemployment is inevitable;
history and sensible policy both suggest a more balanced outcome.
Those who predict a jobless future have a point in the short term. As algorithms learn to
undertake tasks that once needed human judgement – from reading contracts to analysing medical
scans – some occupations will inevitably shrink, and the resulting redundancies can be painful
for the workers affected. It would be naïve to pretend that this transition costs nothing.
However, the assumption that the total number of jobs is fixed is mistaken. When earlier
revolutions automated agriculture and manufacturing, they did not destroy work so much as
transform it, creating entire industries that no one had imagined. There is little reason to
think AI will behave differently: as routine cognitive work is taken over, demand grows for
roles that machines cannot easily fill, and for people who can design, supervise and improve
the systems themselves.
What ultimately decides the outcome, in my view, is not the technology but the policies around
it. Governments that invest in retraining and redeployment, and that enforce fair, secure
employment, can turn disruption into opportunity; those that do nothing will indeed see hardship.
The danger therefore lies less in the machines than in our failure to prepare for them.
In conclusion, although automation will certainly displace some workers and reshape many jobs,
I do not believe it must lead to lasting mass unemployment. With forward-looking social policy,
the same technologies could ultimately expand and improve the world of work.

While.../However.../in my view
/In conclusion
Grammatical Range & Accuracy:让步从句(While I accept...)、定语从句(roles that machines cannot...)、
名词化(the assumption that...is mistaken) 多样且几乎无错。
Describe a job you think will change a lot in the future.
I'd like to talk about being a call-centre or sales account manager, which I read about
recently and think is going to change massively because of AI.
Traditionally, the way these salespeople work is through personal, frequent contact with
clients — they use their own experience to read a situation and decide what to offer. But
companies are starting to bring in analytics tools that basically tell them when to contact
which customer and what to pitch. So the human judgement part is slowly being taken over by
an algorithm.
What I find interesting, and a bit worrying, is that the algorithm can end up becoming the
'keeper of knowledge'. Workers start seeing the job through the system's eyes and depend on
its instructions, so there's less room for instinct or experimentation. I even read that some
people feed the system false data just to hit their targets. So it's a job that still exists,
but the actual skill involved could look completely different in ten years.
feed false data)用口语复述出来,不是背书;what I find interesting / a bit worrying / basically /
Do you think robots and AI will replace human workers?
Well, I think they'll replace certain tasks rather than whole people, if that makes sense.
Anything that's routine and based on data — AI will probably do it faster and cheaper than
us. But I don't buy the idea that we'll just run out of jobs; that assumes the number of jobs
is fixed, and historically every big technological shift has actually created new kinds of
work. So to me the real question isn't 'will robots take our jobs', it's whether governments
retrain people and enforce decent, secure employment. If they do, this could be a good change;
if they don't, that's when you'd see real unemployment.
(the number of jobs is fixed 是 falsehood、retrain、secure employment);用 "I don't buy the idea
that..." / "if that makes sense" 显语言成熟度;不极端、有平衡 = 7.5 的样子。
