Polar Bears: What Their Genes Could Teach Us
①Polar bears are being increasingly threatened by the effects of climate change, but their disappearance could have far-reaching consequences. They are uniquely adapted to the extreme conditions of the Arctic Circle, where temperatures can reach −40°C. One reason for this is that they have up to 11 centimetres of fat underneath their skin. Humans with comparative levels of adipose tissue would be considered obese and would be likely to suffer from diabetes and heart disease. Yet the polar bear experiences no such consequences.
②A 2014 study by Shi Ping Liu and colleagues sheds light on this mystery. They compared the genetic structure of polar bears with that of their closest relatives from a warmer climate, the brown bears. This allowed them to determine the genes that have allowed polar bears to survive in one of the toughest environments on Earth. Liu and his colleagues found the polar bears had a gene known as APoB, which reduces levels of low-density lipoproteins (LDLs) – a form of 'bad' cholesterol. In humans, mutations of this gene are associated with increased risk of heart disease. Polar bears may therefore be an important study model to understand heart disease in humans.
③The genome of the polar bear may also provide the solution for another condition, one that particularly affects our older generation: osteoporosis. This is a disease where bones show reduced density, usually caused by insufficient exercise, reduced calcium intake or food starvation. Bone tissue is constantly being remodelled, meaning that bone is added or removed, depending on nutrient availability and the stress that the bone is under. Female polar bears, however, undergo extreme conditions during every pregnancy. Once autumn comes around, these females will dig maternity dens in the snow and will remain there throughout the winter, both before and after the birth of their cubs. This process results in about six months of fasting, where the female bears have to keep themselves and their cubs alive, depleting their own calcium and calorie reserves. Despite this, their bones remain strong and dense.

True / False / Not Given
Q1 Polar bears are well suited to surviving in extremely cold environments.
答案:TRUE
1 "uniquely adapted to the extreme conditions of the Arctic Circle, where
temperatures can reach −40°C" → 正面对应。
Q2 Brown bears live in a colder climate than polar bears.
答案:FALSE
依据:¶2 "their closest relatives from a warmer climate, the brown bears" → 棕熊在更暖
Q3 Osteoporosis affects more women than men.
答案:NOT GIVEN
Matching Headings(给段落选标题)
¶2 → "What the polar bear's genes reveal"(主旨 = 2014 基因研究、APoB、心脏病模型)
Summary Completion(NO MORE THAN TWO WORDS)
The APoB gene _______ the level of 'bad' cholesterol in polar bears. → reduces
Bone tissue is _______ being remodelled, depending on nutrients and stress. → constantly
During pregnancy, female bears fast for months, _______ their reserves. → depleting

题目(锚定本文主题,方便你看"输入如何变输出"): Scientists often study animals in order to find solutions to human health problems. Some people believe this is the best use of research funding, while others think the money should be spent on humans directly. Discuss both views and give your own opinion.
Animals such as polar bears have increasingly become models for understanding human
disease, and this has reopened a debate about where medical funding should go: into
studying other species, or into research carried out directly on people. While the appeal
of focusing on humans is obvious, I would argue that well-designed animal studies remain
one of medicine's most valuable tools, and that the two approaches are complementary
rather than opposed.
Those who would concentrate funding on humans make a reasonable case. Ultimately it is
human biology that doctors must treat, and findings from other species do not always
transfer; a gene that protects a polar bear from 'bad' cholesterol may behave quite
differently in a person. From this perspective, money spent observing wild animals can
seem like an indirect and uncertain route to a cure, when patients with heart disease or
weakened bones need help now.
However, this view underestimates how much animals can reveal that human studies cannot.
Polar bears carry enormous amounts of fat yet show none of the heart problems this would
cause in humans, and pregnant females fast for months without their bones losing density.
Studying the genes behind these abilities has given researchers clues that would be almost
impossible to obtain ethically from people. Such species therefore act as a natural
laboratory, pointing scientists towards the mechanisms most worth investigating.
In my view, framing the issue as a straight choice is misleading. Animal research rarely
replaces human medicine; instead it narrows down promising leads that are later tested and
refined in people. The wisest policy is to fund both, using insights from species like the
polar bear to make the far more expensive human trials more focused and effective.
In conclusion, although research conducted directly on humans is indispensable, studying
animals is not a waste of resources but a powerful starting point. Science advances fastest
when the two work together rather than competing for the same budget.

Those who.../However/In my view 衔接
Lexical Resource(词汇):complementary / underestimate / indispensable / natural laboratory
Grammatical Range & Accuracy(语法):让步从句(While...)、定语从句(clues that would be
impossible...)、假设句(a gene that... may behave differently) 多样且几乎无错。
Describe an animal you find interesting.
I'd like to talk about the polar bear, which I read about recently and found genuinely
fascinating. On the surface it's just a big white bear that lives in the Arctic, but what
struck me was how extreme its biology is.
For one thing, it survives in temperatures around minus forty, partly because it has
something like eleven centimetres of fat under its skin. The interesting part is that if a
human carried that much fat, they'd almost certainly develop heart disease — but the polar
bear doesn't, because of a particular gene that keeps its 'bad' cholesterol low. Scientists
actually think studying it could help us understand heart disease in people.
The other thing that amazed me is that pregnant females basically fast for about six months
in a den in the snow, and yet their bones stay perfectly strong. For someone like me who
sits at a desk all day, that seems almost impossible. So yeah, it's an animal that might
end up teaching us how to treat our own diseases.
批注:开头点题不绕;把文章学到的事实(11cm fat / APoB / 半年禁食)用口语复述出来,不是背书;
on the surface / what struck me / for one thing / yeah
("someone like me who sits at a desk") = 内容具体 + 流利。
Part 3 延伸:Should governments spend money protecting endangered animals?
Well, I'd say yes, and not just for sentimental reasons. There's the obvious argument that
we have a responsibility not to wipe out other species, which I do agree with. But there's
also a very practical side — animals like the polar bear might hold genetic clues that help
us treat human diseases, so losing them could have far-reaching consequences we can't fully
predict. That said, I think it has to be balanced against urgent human needs, so ideally
it's about smart, targeted funding rather than spending without limit.
