上接 part1(A–D:金字塔起源、Imhotep 石造首创、分阶段建造工艺、建筑群+防卫)。

The Step Pyramid of Djoser(E–G)

E The burial chamber of the tomb, where the king's body was laid to rest, was dug beneath the base of the pyramid, surrounded by a vast maze of long tunnels that had rooms off them to discourage robbers. One of the most mysterious discoveries found inside the pyramid was a large number of stone vessels. Over 40,000 of these vessels, of various forms and shapes, were discovered in storerooms off the pyramid's underground passages. They are inscribed with the names of rulers from the First and Second Dynasties of Egypt and made from different kinds of stone. There is no agreement among scholars and archaeologists on why the vessels were placed in the tomb of Djoser or what they were supposed to represent. The archaeologist Jean-Philippe Lauer, who excavated most of the pyramid and complex, believes they were originally stored and then given a 'proper burial' by Djoser in his pyramid to honor his predecessors. There are other historians, however, who claim the vessels were dumped into the shafts as yet another attempt to prevent grave robbers from getting to the king's burial chamber.

F Unfortunately, all of the precautions and intricate design of the underground network did not prevent ancient robbers from finding a way in. Djoser's grave goods, and even his body, were stolen at some point in the past, and all archaeologists found were a small number of his valuables overlooked by the thieves. There was enough left throughout the pyramid and its complex, however, to astonish and amaze the archaeologists who excavated it.

G Egyptologist Miroslav Verner writes, 'Few monuments hold a place in human history as significant as that of the Step Pyramid in Saqqara … It can be said without exaggeration that this pyramid complex constitutes a milestone in the evolution of monumental stone architecture in Egypt and in the world as a whole.' The Step Pyramid was a revolutionary advance in architecture and became the archetype which all the other great pyramid builders of Egypt would follow.

原文 the king's body was laid to rest → 题干可能写 the king was buried / interred
原文 to discourage robbers → to deter / keep out thieves
原文 one of the most mysterious discoveries → among the most puzzling finds
原文 inscribed with the names of rulers → engraved / marked with kings' names
原文 there is no agreement among scholars → scholars disagree / there is no consensus
原文 what they were supposed to represent → what they were meant to symbolize / stand for
原文 to honor his predecessors → to pay respect to earlier rulers
原文 another attempt to prevent grave robbers → a further measure to stop tomb raiders
原文 did not prevent robbers from finding a way in → failed to stop robbers getting in
原文 valuables overlooked by the thieves → items the thieves missed / failed to notice
原文 enough left ... to astonish and amaze → enough remained to impress / stun
原文 constitutes a milestone in the evolution → marks a turning point / key stage in the development
原文 a revolutionary advance → a groundbreaking / pioneering development
原文 became the archetype which all ... would follow → became the model later builders copied

There is no agreement among scholars on why X happened / what X represents.
There is no agreement among economists on what truly drives inflation.

All of the precautions ... did not prevent ancient robbers from finding a way in.
All of the safety measures did not prevent the system from being hacked.(或 Despite all the precautions, ...)

It can be said without exaggeration that this complex constitutes a milestone in the evolution of ...
It can be said without exaggeration that the internet constitutes a milestone in human communication.

【E】The burial chamber of the tomb, where the king's body was laid to rest, was dug beneath the
base of the pyramid, surrounded by a vast maze of long tunnels that had rooms off them to
     discourage robbers.
主干:The burial chamber was dug beneath the base of the pyramid.(地宫挖在塔基下方)
修饰:of the tomb(定语)| where the king's body was laid to rest(非限定定语从句,补充"安放遗体处")
surrounded by a vast maze of long tunnels(过去分词作状语,"被隧道迷宫环绕")
that had rooms off them(定语从句修饰 tunnels)| to discourage robbers(目的状语)
读法:先锁 "burial chamber was dug beneath the base",两个 where/that 从句 + surrounded 分词都是

【E】The archaeologist Jean-Philippe Lauer, who excavated most of the pyramid and complex, believes
they were originally stored and then given a 'proper burial' by Djoser in his pyramid to honor
     his predecessors.
主干:Jean-Philippe Lauer believes (that) they were stored and given a 'proper burial'.
修饰:The archaeologist(同位语,点明身份)| who excavated most of the pyramid(非限定定语从句)
they were originally stored and then given...(宾语从句,含并列被动 stored / given)
by Djoser(施事)| to honor his predecessors(目的状语)
先抓 "Lauer believes they were
        stored and given a burial",who 从句只是补充他是谁,别被带偏。

【F】Unfortunately, all of the precautions and intricate design of the underground network did not
prevent ancient robbers from finding a way in.
主干:all of the precautions and design did not prevent robbers from finding a way in.
修饰:and intricate design of the underground network(并列主语的第二部分)
from finding a way in(固定结构 prevent sb from doing)
牢记 prevent / stop / discourage + sb + from doing 结构。

【G】The Step Pyramid was a revolutionary advance in architecture and became the archetype which all
the other great pyramid builders of Egypt would follow.
结构:X was a revolutionary advance in Y, and became the archetype which all ... would follow.
亮点:a revolutionary advance(开创性)+ became the archetype(成为原型)+ which 定语从句收束,
The iPhone was a revolutionary advance in mobile computing and became the archetype which
           all later smartphones would follow.

The king's burial chamber lay deep under the pyramid inside a maze of tunnels built to foil robbers,
and storerooms held over 40,000 inscribed stone vessels whose purpose scholars still dispute. Despite
all these precautions, ancient thieves still broke in and looted Djoser's treasures and even his body,
leaving only a few overlooked valuables. Even so, experts call the Step Pyramid a milestone in stone
architecture — a revolutionary design that became the model for every great Egyptian pyramid that followed.

True / False / Not Given

Q1 Scholars agree on the purpose of the stone vessels found in the pyramid.
   答案:FALSE
依据:E "There is no agreement among scholars and archaeologists on why the vessels were placed
... or what they were supposed to represent" → 明说无定论,与"达成一致"相反。
Q2 Ancient robbers managed to break into the burial chamber.
   答案:TRUE
依据:F "did not prevent ancient robbers from finding a way in. Djoser's grave goods, and even his
Q3 Jean-Philippe Lauer was the person who discovered the stone vessels.
NOT GIVEN
Lauer "excavated most of the pyramid" 且"相信"石瓶的用途,从未说"石瓶是他发现的"→ 找不到 = NG。

(迷惑项)"vessels were dumped to prevent grave robbers" → 这是 other historians 的说法,不是 Lauer 的。

Summary Completion(NO MORE THAN TWO WORDS)

The burial chamber was ringed by a maze of tunnels designed to discourage _______. → robbers
Over 40,000 stone _______, inscribed with rulers' names, were found in storerooms. → vessels
Despite the precautions, robbers stole Djoser's grave goods and even his _______. → body

Lauer "excavated most of the pyramid",就脑补"那石瓶肯定也是他发现的"。

Describe a historical place or building you have learned about.

I'd like to talk about the Step Pyramid of Djoser in Egypt, which I read about recently and found
fascinating — it's often called the very first pyramid ever built in stone.

What really stuck with me was the engineering behind it. The king's burial chamber was dug deep
beneath the pyramid and surrounded by a whole maze of tunnels, basically designed to discourage
grave robbers. There were even storerooms holding something like forty thousand stone vessels, and
interestingly, experts still don't agree on why they were put there.

The slightly sad part is that, despite all those precautions, ancient robbers still found a way in
and stole almost everything, even the king's body. But what amazed the archaeologists who excavated
it was how much was still left. For me the most striking thing is its legacy — historians describe it
as a milestone in architecture, the archetype that every later Egyptian pyramid followed. So it's not
just an old building; it's where a whole tradition basically started.
archetype)用口语复述,不是背书;what really stuck with me / basically / interestingly 等地道口语标记;

Why do you think people are so interested in ancient monuments?

Well, I think it's a mix of things. Partly it's curiosity — a structure like the Step Pyramid is
basically a milestone in human history, so people want to see where it all began. But there's also an
emotional side: these monuments are a tribute to people who lived thousands of years ago, and standing
in front of one connects you to them in a way a textbook can't. That said, I'd argue the practical
value matters too — the tourism they attract funds local jobs and, crucially, the excavation and
conservation work that keeps them standing. So it's curiosity, identity and economics all at once.
批注:先给"多重原因"框架,再分 好奇 / 情感 / 实用 三层;复用阅读词 milestone / tribute / excavation;
用 "that said" 做让步、"all at once" 收束显语言成熟度;不极端、有层次 = 7.5 的样子。
