Image Title and Caption not preserved when Saving as Draft while posting from another App

Expected behavior

Image Title and Caption should be preserved when posting from another App via save as draft Wordpress action.

Actual behavior

Image Title is set to image_57669346498356
Caption is empty

Steps to reproduce the behavior

User provided these steps:

• Open Lightroom
• Open a photo
• Verify that the Title and Caption are both set to ‘Up-Close Columbine’
• Tap the Share button and choose ‘small size’ which is 2048.
• Tap the ‘save as draft’ Wordpress action (because I do not want to post yet)
• Open Wordpress for iOS
• Open Media
• Open image just uploaded
• Look in the information below the image
• Title is set to ‘image_57669346498356’
• Caption is empty
• Both should be set to ‘Up-Close Columbine’

If I load the same image from my photo library using ‘+’ in the Wordpress for iOS Media view, I get the image WITH the title and caption set properly

Additionally, user shared this:

• Open Lightroom
• Open same photo
• Tap the Share button and choose ‘small size’ which is 2048.
• Tap the ‘save image’ action
• Open Photos
• Tap Share button
• Tap MetaGear (Photos does not display Basic or IPTC metadata, so I use this app)
• Both Title and Caption are set to ‘Up-Close Columbine’ as expected.

That indicates that the Share feature is transferring a file with the metadata, but Wordpress does not seem to be reading it.

Tested on iPad, iOS 12.2, WPiOS [not sure]

Tested and confirmed that EXIF data such as Title and Caption are not kept when a photo is shared into WordPress using the Sharing Extension.

My testing steps:

1. Add a Title and Caption to an image (in any app).
   _{I used Lightroom on macOS (screenshot, sample file: IMG_20190310_114315.jpg, sample EXIF: IMG_20190310_114315.txt).}
2. Save the image to an iPad.
   _{I used AirDrop to transfer the sample file.}
3. Go to WPiOS on iPad > Me > App Settings and turn on "Use Block Editor".
4. Go to My Sites > Blog Posts > + and add a post title and upload the image into an image block.
5. Go to My Sites > Media and tap on the image.
6. Check to see if the title given in step 1 are there or not.
7. Go to the Photos app on iPad.
8. Tap on the exact same image saved in step 2.
9. Tap the share icon.
10. Select the WordPress app or the "Save as Draft" option.
    _{I tested both with the same result.}
11. Give the post a title and share it into WordPress
    _{Note: sharing to a different site will make it easier to find the newly uploaded image.}
12. Go to My Sites > Media and tap on the image that was just uploaded.
13. Check to see if the title given in step 1 are there or not.

Result: image EXIF data for Title and Caption are preserved when inserting an image via the block editor but are not preserved when inserting an image using the Share Extension.

^{Tested with WP Internal 12.2.0.20190408 on iPad Mini 4 (WiFi) (iPad5,1) iOS 12.2.}

I think this is actually an enhancement request. @nheagy is this something the Sharing Extension is capable of when sharing images from apps like Lightroom or Photos into the WordPress app?

I am the customer originally contacting support about this issue.
This may be a behavior in the core Wordpress for iOS app. I have just discovered that if I add media using ‘other apps’ and select multiple files form the Apple Files app it generates a filename rather than using the filename displayed in the Files app.

Hi @leebutler! Thanks for reporting the issue. Photography is my forever hobby, so image issues are close to my heart. 😊 For this case, it might also be the behavior of the API used by the app (that bit may further investigation from a developer but we can also test it by trying the same test on WordPress.com directly). In my testing so far, I used the Photos app to share to the WordPress iOS app.

I just tried adding two photos using the “save as draft” share extension and Wordpress did not have the right title or caption. The title was generated and the caption was empty. I verified both had a title and caption in photos... Lee
