Vivliostyle Project Tasks (2025-07 to 2026-06)

The following tasks are planned for the Vivliostyle project from 2025-07 to 2026-06, supported by the NLnet Foundation's NGI Zero Commons grant.

Vivliostyle.js

• Improving CSS Paged Media implementation - Issues:

  • Incorrect positioning in page area with @page with padding vivliostyle.js#1447
  • Support fit-content / min-content / max-content for inline-size in page margin boxes vivliostyle.js#1520
  • Support "text-overflow: ellipsis" in page-margin boxes vivliostyle.js#1473
  • CSS page floats clear vivliostyle.js#1499

• Improving page and column breaking processing - Issues:

  • Broken multi-column specified on a non root or body element vivliostyle.js#579
  • Forced page breaks specified on table rows or cells not working vivliostyle.js#1492
  • Performance issue with very long paragraph across pages vivliostyle.js#1256

• Improving footnotes implementation - Issues:

  • Support CSS @footnote for footnote area vivliostyle.js#1045
  • footnotes in table are ignored vivliostyle.js#438
  • Footnote counters not properly incremented vivliostyle.js#421

• Support for CSS Nesting - Issue:

• Support for other CSS features - Issues:

Vivliostyle Pub

• Alpha 1 release - Simple WYSIWYG editor, theme and style customization, page preview, multiple manuscript file management, file export (EPUB, WebPub)

• Alpha 2 release - Enhance manuscript editor (image insertion, Markdown support), theme and template features, file-level preview and book preview, PDF output via browser print function

  • Add a template feature for Themes vivliostyle-cli#636
  • Use a template feature for project boilerplate vivliostyle.pub#2
  • Multimedia management (images, fonts, etc.) vivliostyle.pub#4
  • Insert images vivliostyle.pub#6
  • Add a floating menu for the editor vivliostyle.pub#7

• Alpha 3 release - Backend implementation with GitHub or other cloud storage integration, server-side PDF generation

• Beta release - Deploy Vivliostyle Pub on a server for public beta testing, allowing many users to access it, with user account management features

• Implement recommendations from accessibility audit

• v1.0 release - Stable release of Vivliostyle Pub, with improvements based on user feedback, accessibility, and security audits

Vivliostyle CLI, Themes and samples

• Support for browsers other than Chromium - Issue:

  • Consider switching back to Puppeteer from Playwright vivliostyle-cli#553

• Enhance Vivliostyle themes (including stylesheets and templates for typesetting) and samples useful for various publications

Documentation

• Migrate the documentation site building tool to a new one to make it easier to update the documentation, support multiple languages, and improve searchability

• Enrich documentation content - CSS typesetting tutorial, CSS feature reference, how to use and create Vivliostyle themes, how to use command line tools, how to use Vivliostyle Pub
