TikTok Shop is TikTok's in-app commerce platform that lets users discover and purchase products without leaving the app. It has grown from $15 million in monthly US GMV in July 2023 to over $1.1 billion in monthly US GMV by mid-2025. Globally, the platform has passed $70 billion in total GMV since launch.
For ecommerce brands, TikTok Shop represents a fundamentally different sales channel: content and checkout live in the same place. A user watches a creator video, taps the product tag, and completes the purchase — all without leaving TikTok. This dramatically reduces checkout friction and produces conversion rates 5-10x higher than driving traffic to an external website.

The conversion rate difference between TikTok Shop (in-app checkout) and driving traffic to an external website is dramatic:
| Destination | Typical CVR | Why |
|---|---|---|
| External website (Shopify) | 0.5%-2.4% | User leaves TikTok → browser opens → page loads → finds product → adds to cart → enters payment info → purchases. Every step loses people. |
| TikTok Shop (in-app) | 5%-10%+ | User taps product tag → sees product page within TikTok → taps "Buy Now" → payment info already saved → purchase complete. 2-3 taps total. |
This 5-10x CVR advantage means that even if your CPM is identical, TikTok Shop campaigns produce dramatically lower CPAs than website-destination campaigns. The checkout friction reduction is the single biggest driver.
Based on US market data, the strongest categories on TikTok Shop are:
- Beauty and personal care — ~40% of US TikTok Shop GMV. Tutorials, "get ready with me," before/after content.
- Health and wellness — Supplements, fitness products, wellness routines.
- Fashion and apparel — Try-on hauls, outfit of the day, seasonal trends.
- Home and lifestyle — Kitchen gadgets, home organization, cleaning products.
- Food and beverage — Snacks, specialty foods, viral food products.
Common thread: Products that can be demonstrated visually, create a before/after moment, or inspire "TikTok made me buy it" reactions.
As of July 2025, GMV Max is the only ad campaign type available for TikTok Shop destinations. All legacy formats (Video Shopping Ads, Product Shopping Ads, LIVE Shopping Ads) have been sunsetted.
GMV Max is fundamentally different from any other ad campaign type on any platform:
-
It optimizes total GMV, not just ad-driven sales. GMV Max treats organic, affiliate, and paid traffic as a unified optimization problem. The algorithm allocates budget to wherever it drives the most total revenue — including boosting organic and affiliate content that is already performing.
-
You do not upload creative to GMV Max. All creative must exist organically first — as seller content, affiliate content, or authorized Spark Ads. GMV Max pulls from all available content automatically and decides which to boost.
-
Attribution is blended. If an affiliate creator's organic video goes viral and drives 500 sales while GMV Max is running, those 500 sales may appear in your GMV Max reporting. This means GMV Max ROAS is inflated by design because it includes organic sales that may have happened without the ad spend.
In TikTok Seller Center:
- Navigate to: Marketing tab → GMV Max
- Select a Primary Ad Account (each shop can connect one ad account)
- Choose products to promote:
- TikTok recommends products with at least $1,500 GMV in the past 7 days
- Or products with significant creator/affiliate content already in circulation
- Set ROI target:
- TikTok pre-fills based on historical performance
- Start 10-20% below your current average ROI, then tighten once stable
- Set daily budget:
- Minimum: enough to generate ~50 conversions in 7 days
- Recommended: $100-$500/day to start, scale from there
- Enable creative sources:
- Autoselect: TikTok pulls from all eligible, product-linked content
- Manual: You choose which content is eligible
- Launch and allow 7-14 days for learning
| Type | What It Optimizes | When to Use |
|---|---|---|
| Product GMV Max | Revenue from product sales across FYP, Shop Tab, Search | Default for most sellers. Start here. |
| LIVE GMV Max | Revenue generated during livestream sessions | If you run regular live shopping events |
1. Creative volume is the #1 success factor.
GMV Max can only promote content that already exists. The more product-linked videos you have (from your brand, from affiliates, from creators), the more options the algorithm has to test and optimize.
- Target: 5-10+ new product-linked videos per product per week
- Sources: Your own content, affiliate creators, Spark Ads from paid creators
- Use TikTok's bulk creative exclusion filter to remove underperforming content (< 2% CTR)
2. Choose the right products.
Not every product in your catalog will work on TikTok Shop. Focus on:
- Products with existing sales momentum (proven demand)
- Products with strong visual appeal (demonstrates well in video)
- Products with multiple creator videos already posted
- Products with competitive pricing (TikTok Shop users are price-sensitive)
3. ROI targets: start conservative.
If your historical ROI is 2.5x, start GMV Max at 2.0-2.2x. Give the algorithm room to explore. Tighten the target gradually (10% at a time) as performance stabilizes.
4. Do not touch it constantly.
GMV Max needs stability to optimize. Avoid:
- Budget changes > 20-50% at a time
- Changing ROI targets every few days
- Adding/removing products frequently during the learning phase
- Allow 7 days minimum before evaluating
5. Understand the attribution inflation.
GMV Max reports blended attribution — organic + paid + affiliate sales all appear in the campaign metrics. This means:
- Your GMV Max "ROAS" will look higher than the true incremental ROAS of the ad spend
- Build a shadow metric: track net-new CPA or contribution margin separately
- Export raw order data to Shopify or a BI tool for real analysis
- Until TikTok rolls out organic vs. paid attribution splits, treat GMV Max ROAS with caution
On TikTok Shop, affiliate creators drive approximately two-thirds of US GMV. Pre-recorded creator videos outperform brand-created content and livestreams for most product categories.
The affiliate model:
- You list products in TikTok's Affiliate Marketplace with a commission rate (typically 10-30%)
- Creators browse the marketplace and apply to promote your products
- Approved creators make videos featuring your products with product tags
- When a viewer purchases through the creator's link, the creator earns the commission
- GMV Max can automatically boost high-performing affiliate content
Commission structure:
- Open plan: Any creator can promote your products at a flat commission rate. Maximum reach, less control over who promotes you.
- Targeted plan: Invite specific creators with negotiated commission rates. More control, less scale.
- Recommendation: Run both. Open plan for volume, targeted plan for high-quality creators you want to build relationships with.
Commission rate guidelines:
- 10-15%: Competitive for commodity products
- 15-20%: Standard for most DTC brands
- 20-30%: Aggressive — attracts top creators but impacts margin
- Factor commission costs into your contribution margin calculation
TikTok Creator Marketplace: Built-in tool for discovering creators by niche, audience size, engagement rate, and sales history.
What to look for in affiliates:
- Engagement rate > 3% (above TikTok average)
- Content style that matches your brand
- Audience demographics aligned with your customer
- History of driving Shop sales (check their GMV metrics)
- Regular posting cadence (active creators, not one-and-done)
Creator management at scale:
- Send free products to promising creators (seeding)
- Provide creative briefs with key talking points (not scripts — TikTok audiences detect scripted content)
- Track which creators drive the most sales and increase their commission rates
- Build a stable of 20-50 active affiliates for consistent content volume
Live shopping on TikTok lets you sell products in real-time through a livestream. You demo products, answer questions, and viewers purchase directly from the stream.
Live Shopping in the US: While live shopping accounts for under 30% of US TikTok Shop GMV (pre-recorded video drives ~70%), it is growing rapidly and can generate massive sales spikes during events.
- Products that benefit from real-time demonstration
- Products with multiple SKUs where a host can show variations
- Flash sales and limited-time offers
- Brands with a charismatic host or influencer partnership
- Categories where Q&A drives purchase confidence (skincare, supplements, tech)
- Schedule lives at peak hours (evenings and weekends perform best in the US)
- Run for at least 2-4 hours — TikTok's algorithm takes time to push live traffic. Short streams underperform.
- Use LIVE GMV Max to drive paid traffic into your livestream
- Feature 5-10 products per session with clear pricing and limited-time offers
- Engage constantly — respond to comments, do product comparisons, create urgency
- Pin products at key moments to make purchasing frictionless
| Factor | TikTok Shop | Your Website (Shopify) |
|---|---|---|
| CVR | 5-10%+ (in-app checkout) | 0.5-2.4% (external redirect) |
| Customer data ownership | TikTok owns the customer relationship | You own the customer data |
| Email/SMS remarketing | Limited — TikTok controls post-purchase comms | Full control — build your email list |
| Platform fees | TikTok takes a commission (varies by category, typically 5-8%) | No marketplace commission |
| LTV potential | Lower — harder to build direct relationship | Higher — full control over retention |
| Brand experience | Limited to TikTok's checkout UI | Full control over site design and experience |
| Best for | Impulse buys, lower AOV, viral products, new customer acquisition | Higher AOV, subscription products, brand building, LTV focus |
Run both. Use TikTok Shop for acquisition at scale (low friction, high CVR), and drive repeat purchases through your website where you own the customer relationship and can build LTV through email/SMS.
- TikTok Shop captures the first purchase with minimal friction
- Post-purchase, retarget TikTok Shop buyers through your website to get them into your owned channels (email list, SMS)
- Measure TikTok Shop on first-order contribution margin, not LTV (you may not retain these customers on TikTok Shop long-term)
TikTok Search Ads and GMV Max serve different roles and work best together:
| Search Ads | GMV Max | |
|---|---|---|
| Intent level | High — user searched for something specific | Mixed — algorithm finds potential buyers |
| Targeting | Keywords (exact, phrase, broad) | No targeting — fully automated |
| Destination | TikTok Shop OR external website | TikTok Shop only |
| Creative control | You choose which video ads to show | Algorithm pulls from all eligible content |
| Best for | Capturing active demand | Creating and converting demand at scale |
Recommended setup:
- GMV Max as the primary campaign (70-80% of TikTok Shop budget)
- Search Ads Campaign for high-intent category terms (20-30% of budget)
- Use Search Ads to capture demand that GMV Max and organic content create
| Metric | What It Tells You | Where to Find |
|---|---|---|
| GMV | Total sales revenue through TikTok Shop | Seller Center |
| Orders | Total number of purchases | Seller Center |
| AOV | Average order value | GMV / Orders |
| GMV Max ROI | Return on ad spend (blended — includes organic) | Seller Center / Ads Manager |
| Net-new CPA | Cost to acquire a new customer (not just a sale) | Manual calculation — export order data |
| Affiliate commission spend | Total paid to creators | Seller Center → Affiliate tab |
| Content volume | Number of product-linked videos created per week | Seller Center → Content tab |
| Creator count | Number of active affiliates posting content | Seller Center → Affiliate tab |
TikTok Shop has additional costs compared to selling on your own site:
TikTok Shop Contribution Margin =
Sale Price
- COGS
- Shipping
- TikTok platform commission (5-8%)
- Affiliate commission (10-30% if applicable)
- Payment processing (handled by TikTok)
- GMV Max ad spend (allocated per order)
= Contribution Margin per TikTok Shop order
This margin is typically lower than your website margin because of the platform commission and affiliate costs. Factor this into your ROAS targets — a 3x ROAS on TikTok Shop may produce less profit per order than a 3x ROAS on your website because of the additional fees.
GMV Max reports total GMV including organic and affiliate-driven sales. To understand the true incremental value of your ad spend:
- Compare total Shop GMV before launching GMV Max vs. after
- The difference is a rough estimate of incremental GMV from the ad spend
- Run GMV Max on/off tests (1 week on, 1 week off) to measure the delta
- Track which percentage of GMV Max-attributed sales came from organic vs. paid content
- Use post-purchase surveys to understand how customers found you
| SOP Concept | TikTok Shop Connection |
|---|---|
| CPM (02) | TikTok Shop campaigns benefit from TikTok's low CPMs ($3-$7) combined with dramatically higher CVR from in-app checkout. |
| CTR (02) | Less relevant — TikTok Shop's product tags and checkout flow mean the "click" is more like "tap to buy" than a traditional click-through. |
| CVR (02) | The biggest advantage: 5-10%+ CVR from in-app checkout vs. 0.5-2.4% for external. This is the primary reason to sell through TikTok Shop. |
| AOV (02) | Tends to be lower on TikTok Shop (impulse buys, price-sensitive audience). Offset with bundles and quantity discounts. |
| Attribution (08) | GMV Max attribution is blended (organic + paid). Treat reported ROAS with caution. Track incrementality manually. |
| Contribution Margin (10) | Platform commission + affiliate commission + ad spend must all be factored in. TikTok Shop margin per order is typically lower than website margin. Set ROAS targets accordingly. |
