Testing the uart rx and tx using PuttY

Hey, I tried to upload the bit file generated using Xilinx ISE for the files in example dir (incl dependencies (uart)) but I am not able to send or receive data. When I start PuttY, with bps as 9600, a blank window comes on which key press does not do anything. Any help would be appreciated.

I presume you're using the ATLYS board? The exar UART chip on that board is a little strange. Can you try uploading a design that loops the RX directly to the TX and try that? There are a couple of different silicon revisions of that chip, and one of them has issues with coming up in a hardware handshaking mode by default, but the pins on the ATLYS board are not connected to the FPGA and are pulled the wrong way. There may be some dependence on the installed driver as well; are you sure you have the latest exar UART driver installed? And I presume you also made sure to connect your USB cable to the USB UART connector instead of the USB JTAG connector?
