Thanks for the report — found it. backend/converters/vlm.py:447 sends image_url as a plain string:

"image_url": f"data:image/png;base64,{img_b64}",

That matches Ollama's own (non-standard) example, but the official OpenAI schema requires image_url to be an object with a url field. Providers that validate strictly against that spec will reject it, which surfaces as "Invalid base64 value."

Fix:

"image_url": {"url": f"data:image/png;base64,{img_b64}"},

Following up — does this fix it on your end? Let me know which provider you're using so I can confirm it works there too before closing this issue.
