Repair is not image management. It is the disciplined attempt to make truth, responsibility, restitution, and future guardrails visible after harm.
Use this script when you caused harm, benefited from harm, ignored harm you were responsible to address, or made a commitment you did not keep.
Name the behavior, condition, or pattern that must stop.
"I will stop..."
Say what happened without minimizing, expanding, dramatizing, or shifting blame.
"What happened was..."
Name the injury, cost, betrayal, burden, or lost trust.
"The harm was..."
Ask the affected person or reviewer what you missed. Do not require them to comfort you.
"What am I not seeing?"
Distinguish responsibility from intent.
"Whether or not I intended it, I am responsible for..."
Offer concrete repair. Good repair is specific, proportionate, and checkable.
"I will repair this by..."
Include a date, amount, action, replacement, public correction, changed process, or other verifiable measure.
Name what will prevent repetition.
"To keep this from repeating, I will..."
Record what should be carried forward.
"The lesson I will remember is..."
- Repair does not require unsafe contact.
- Forgiveness cannot be demanded as proof that repair was sufficient.
- Some harms require professional, legal, medical, or institutional process.
- Repeated apologies without changed conduct are not repair.
- Restitution should not create new harm.
